Week 25 - Data Collection and Evidence

Topic:
If I used the blended learning methods in numeracy, how will this affect the level of student engagement in an intermediate class?

After doing some intense research on making clear the two main words viz. blended learning and student engagement, I now feel much more confident as to which path I would like my inquiry to take and hopefully this inquiry will help me inform my teaching and my students' learning in other learning areas as well.

There are two types of data that one can collect viz. qualitative and quantitative data. I am taking into consideration the ethical implications of my data collection as one of the communities that I am engaging with is my class of 11 and 12 year olds, being children.

Qualitative

  • interviews - person-to-person or one-on-one format
  • focus groups - interviews on a specific topic with a small group of people
  • observations -  spending a prolonged amount of time in the setting, in this case the classroom and making anecdotal notes
  • review of documents - student essays and/or blogs

Quantitative
  • Surveys: the number of responses to close-ended questions in a survey (e.g. multiple choice, Likert scale, Yes/No, True/False)
  • Pre and post test: student grades or test scores
  • Classroom (or other location) observations: e.g. Behaviour tally sheets
  • Students’ just-in-time responses using digital technologies and posts on social media: the number of responses.

Key terminologies of inquiry - blended learning, flipped classroom activities, student engagement

  1. Hi Tilly,

It's great to see that you are so engaged in your learning and are delving deep to investigate blended learning and engagement. I must admit, I am fairly new to blended learning other than what we have discussed during Mindlab and need to do the same.

You have brainstormed a vast selections of quantitive and qualitative data collections. I wonder if you will or have selected one or two if you were to complete your inquiry? It will be great to find out if by having slightly older children, then you be able to collect more data than those who teach juniors.

Best of luck for the remainder of your studies :)
