Week 30 Contemporary Trends in New Zealand or Internationally

In this reflection, I use Rolfe et al.’s (2001) model to focus the impact of digital learning, how
it influences education and how has it been addressed by educational institutions.

What
The trend of digital learning caught my attention as in our school all staff implement the use of
devices into teaching. Teachers in our school are utilising technology in the best ways possible.
As a BYOD school from Years 3 to 8 with iPads provided in Years 0-3, teachers use technology
to engage students by using applications or by making them part of digital communities
(blogs, google sites, etc.) Daggett (p.4, 2014) says that “using technology effectively in
everyday learning can help students to strengthen their learning experiences and build on
their intuitive technology skills”. Teachers are comfortable when teaching students to use
devices for “publishing” or for research. They are using technology in creative ways to teach
the students to become digital citizens but do teachers have the necessary skills themselves?
So What?
Daggett (2014) found that “71% of high school students communicate via text”, “3 out of 10
students in grades 6-12 are using Twitter”, “30% of middle school students create videos and
post them online” (p.5).  Therefore, in order for teachers to keep up with this trend, we need
to become regular users of technology ourselves. We can join online communities like Twitter
or communicate with like-minded educators on Facebook or Google+. Daggett (2014) refers
to digital badges or credentials that can be earned for professional growth. Sometimes it’s
challenging to get teachers on board with using technology as they are not totally comfortable
with using it. Schools are also required to become more flexible in their delivery of the
curriculum. Daggett (2014) refers to schools that will do well as “those that embrace digital
learning and are willing to disrupt their traditional delivery systems” (p.5). At  our school many
opportunities are given to take advantage of the technology available and our digital fluencies
rubric is easy to follow. Teachers feel supported and willing to try new technology.
I am currently working on upskilling myself as I this is important to prepare students face
challenges that technology may present. Digital devices in education improve student
engagement and numerous apps support teachers and students raise outcomes. Using
technology opens students up to the world of social media which is positive for social and
technical engagement. Obstacles I need to overcome in my current practise is the knowledge
of what can be achieved using devices to encourage student engagement. I need to become
more confident to integrate this new learning into my daily planning to provide the best learning
experiences. Further problems presented to schools are how much time, professional
development and resources should be allocated to digital learning while engaging learners,
and keeping systems and technologies current (CORE education, n.d.). These impact on
teachers in preparing students to adapt as changes in the world and technology fast approach.
Now what
As a way forward, I need to develop learning tasks and teaching that can enhance learning.
I will look at what I need to explicitly teach for students to achieve success. To make an impact
on learning I intend to use the SAMR model so I can “move” students from substitution through
to redefinition. I will continue to use social networks like Google+ and Twitter to connect
globally with other like-minded educators to grow my confidence and to share research with
colleagues. I wish to become more divergent in my thinking so I can use devices in engaging
ways.
